According to Ayurveda mostly Joint & Muscle pains are caused by the aggravation of vata (air) dosha. It is a condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and aggravation of vata. Causes include both internal and external factors. It is also more common in old age when Vata naturally increases in the body. Meat diet, foods such as ice cream, to much concentrated dairy such as aged cheese or goods of sour cream or cheese with your meals, cold foods especially during cold weather which weaken the digestion, heavy cakes, pastries and candies, packaged and processed foods with little fiber are the main dietary causes. Gas producing vegetables and legumes also create more internal air which moves the toxins to different parts also the condition. This ama blocks tissue pores and passages. This causes heaviness and weakness of the heart which becomes the seat of the disease.

Vata type:

Most common type. Severe, throbbing and cutting pain that is variable and migrating. This becomes worse in cold weather or when cold water comes in contact with the affected joints.

Other symptoms include dry or scaly skin, stiff or cracking joints, bone deformities, gas, abdominal distension, low back pain, nervousness, fear, anxiety and insomnia.

The pain is relieved by heat. Constipation is usually a symptom. Body types will usually be thin. Best to live in a tropical climate and follow a Vata diet.

Pitta type:

Second common. There will be a burning sensation with redness and inflammation which becomes worse in hot weather or from hot water. Diarrhea, loose stool, anger, sweating, fever, irritability are usually present. With Pitta type it is recommended to use bitter herbs along with the Guggulu.

Kapha type:

Least common. There will be itching, swelling or loss of movement and edema without inflammation around the joints. It becomes worse in cold, damp or wet weather. Other symptoms may be heaviness, aches, oily skin, congestion or mucus in the stool. Pain is relieved by heat or hot-dry weather. Best to live in a hot-dry climate and follow a Kapha diet.

It is the most effect herb used in the Ayurvedic treatment of arthritis. Guggulu has strong rejuvenating, purifying, medicinal and healing qualities. Guggulu is perhaps used more than any other herb in Ayurveda. Vata (under-weight) and Kapha (obese) types benefit the most from this herb. Guggulu increases the white blood cell count, dis-infects secretions in the body. Guggulu has been used extensively for similar health disorders such as rheumatism, gout and lumbago.

Rasna (Vanda roxburghii):

The root of the plant is found Effective in inflammations, rheumatic disorders, osteoarthritis and allied disorders. It has been used for indigestion also.

Lohsun / Garlic (Allium sativum) :

Garlic has been demonstrated as effective for high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and as an anti-infection agent. It has more recently been found to be effective against rheumatoid arthritis. It may used singularly or in combination with the usual medications.

Indian Gooseberry (Emblica Officinalis Gaertn) :

To treat rheumatism a teaspoon of the powder of the dry fruit mixed with 2 teaspoons of jaggery can be taken twice daily for a month.

Indian Aloe (Aloe vera):

Indian aloe is useful in lumbago, sciatica, gout and rheumatism. The pulp of one leaf is taken daily for relief.

Diet :

Avoid curd & all sour items pulses (except moong dal), rice, meat, fish, white bread, sugar, refined cereals, fried foods, tea or coffee.

Have potato & lemon juice

Celery seeds, bitter gourd are highly beneficial.

'Vajikarana (Ayurvedic aphrodisiac treatments)'

Ayurveda is divided in eight branches, which are carefully chiseled out to meet specific needs in the process of maintaining health and preventing diseases. Vajikarana is one of the eight branches which deals with all types of physical, and psychological sexual problems like impotence, libido, poor erection and early ejaculation in males and sterility, frigidity in females. Ayurveda strongly believed that a weak shukra dhatu was the culprit behind all male and female sexual problems. Vajikaran tantra (technique) claims that it has tips for a normal, healthy and mature shukra dhatu, which is ultimately essential for satisfying and productive sex.

Stree (female) is the greatest of all the vajikaran Dravya as said by charakh. Before vajikaran, pancha karma therapy is advised. Vajikaran is good for health and influence mental health also and psyche (mind) is considered as the origin of momentum for sexual desire.
Vajikaran thus deals not only with modes of increasing sexual vigor but also psychosomatic disorders.

Vajikaran basically comprises of three components -
1] a disciplined life style
2] conditional sexual act basing itself upon the assumption that sex is for better reproduction and not only for pleasure, and
3] the use of vajikaran drugs (aphrodisiac medicinal formulations) to achieve these sexual goals.

Vajikaran doesn’t contradict the abstaining from sex i.e. the brahmacharya but believes that sex is a means to procreation thus vajikaran serves the purpose of ‘Purushartha Chatushtaya’( Dharma , Artha ,Kama and Moksha) by helping to procreate sustainable species.

Aphrodisiac for men according to the texts have been divided into five categories.

Promoting production of semen: (milk, ghee, onion vidari, musali, gokshura, shatavari, yashtimadhu and semen from various other animals).
Purifying action on semen: (kushtha, sugar cane, bayberry).
Promoting fertilization capacity in semen: (brahmi, shatavari, katuka, guduchi, amalaki, bala.
Herbs that increase libido: (akarakarabh, saffron, clove, garlic, pippali).
Tonics to combat premature ejaculation: (nutmeg, ashwagandha, chandhan, jatamansi, kapikachchu).
The texts have warned that it is important that a person not only pays attention to these herbs but also to the principles of virilization such as detoxification before the consumption of drugs as well as to gain control over one’s senses.

Vrishyavati

Properties – ‘Vrishavati’ is formulated as a male reproductive system stimulant. ‘Vrishyavati’ is useful in male infertility, impotency, loss of libido and other reproductive disorders. In Sanskrit, mind is known as manas, which is often compared to the form of a mighty ocean, because of its infinite spread and depth and also the constant agitation and turmoil which it witnesses especially in struggling for survival and mundane achievements.

As the mind is susceptible for the frequent storms of passion and breezes of cravings and desires, it undergoes various modifications or moods (vrittis).

Known as the modal consciousness, such mood changes can impart certain partial knowledge about something or some events. However, Vedanta, the ancient school of Indian philosophy emphasizes the need of cultivating mental tranquility despite such changes.

It is the ancient technique of meditation which aims at bringing in such tranquility essential for the very survival of the human organism and its society. It refers to a process of silencing certain thoughts which are known to cause misery and sorrow – not only to the individual who develops them but also to the whole family or society, which harbours him.

Vedanta says that when mind (antahkarana, the internal constituent of one’s being) is tinged with different objects of thoughts and feelings, it takes automatically their form and characteristics.

The thought and feeling processes involve what is referred to as primordial energy (prakriti) , which manifests as the three gunas (qualities): sattva (light or awakening), rajas (passion or action)and tamas (lethargy or procrastination).

All these psychic forms are nothing but the manifestation of the mind or antahkarana.

We have seen that the desires and passions form the root-cause of mental disturbance, as they tend to disturb the balance ( the state of equilibrium) of mind. As a result, they create sorrows and sufferings in life – both for the individuals as well as for their family or society.

Focusing or meditating on nada (intonation) frees an individual from the constraints of Time, Space and Causality. It is interesting to note that as we sing or play music, the distinction between the past, present and future melt down. The singer or player is led to a state of consciousness which is infinite and eternal (“aham brahma”). The history of fine arts and music around the world indicate that man, in order to overcome his conflicts, had invented – and has been inventing till date- many forms of music. All of them are based on his desire, passion, will and the urge in varying degrees. Music, in a way, is the ending of thought, which leads one to a different dimension which is beyond Time, Space and Causality.

There has been a growing realization of the vrittis, ( the thoughts, memories, imagination and ideas along with confusion in thinking) which diffuse and diverge the mind, interfering with the one-appointed, uni-focal approach celebrated by the yogis.

Recent experiments conducted by this author in recent decade along with musicians, musicologists, psychologists and other medical professionals all indicate that in order to change the negative approach/pattern in one’s mind, the positive approach/pattern involved in music can be a panacea.

Basically all forms of music exhibit positive and healthy pattern which is pleasant and nice. ‘Ranja yati ragah’ (‘What remains pleasant is a raga’) is an ancient definition for raga. In other words, what is not pleasant cannot be a raga or music.

The research done so far by Nada Centre for Music Therapy, Chennai (www.nada.in) indicates that all types of music – including Indian ragas – which have to be necessarily pleasant can be categorized into three groups on the basis of their qualities : sattva, rajas and tamas.

We find numerous examples to illustrate this classification. The musical varieties which impart relaxation and peace- as may be seen in softly-played, slow-moving ragas such as Sama, Kanada, Ahirbhairav (Chakravaham), Nilambari, Mayamalavagowla etc can fit into the sattva category like a fiddle! Remember that these musical pieces have to be moderately slow (but steady) and soft like Mother Theressa or Mahatma Gandhi!

As regards rajas goes, most of the western genres of music which use large orchestral support and the modern versions which use heavy beats and drums and the ragas which assert (even when played in a subtle manner) such as Durbar, Kadanakuthoohalam, Anandabhairavi, Khamas can come under this category.

Tamas, we all know, is a quality of recession, retrograde, or in plain terms, lethargy. There is no dearth for such songs and music these days! Sometimes one wonders whether popularity of such songs and music reflects the very mind of the listeners- which is obviously lethargic or easy-going!

Having categorized all available music from India and other parts of the world to these three categories, the job of an Indian music therapist becomes much simpler.

Now a treatment schedule has to be planned for each patient to inject the quality which is most suited for him or her at a given stage of treatment. To slow down the angry and impatient, sattva-music is the obvious choice. Like-wise to cool down the temper of the elderly and over-tensed patients, the same music should do good. For those persons who are lethargic or slow, there is a need for prescribing rajasic music. While imparting music therapy, it is prudent to avoid tamasic-music altogether, though at times to start with tamasic people can be attracted with this genre of music initially, but subsequently rajasic or saatvic music can follow- without even their knowledge!

Music is now known to control or influence the mind as it causes the mind to be concentrated upon it. Nada yoga has recognized that music prepares the ground of meditation as well as of the attainment of samadhi or the super-conscious state in which the individual soul finds its everlasting peace and attains the God-consciousness.
God consciousness in modern context implies overcoming over-selfishness, creating fellow-feelings and helping the downtrodden and the fellow beings with unconditional love. It is these qualities that can bind humans as a strong society and not those divisive forces we come across day in and day out in politics and terrorism these days.

Every liquid eg.- Madhu, ghee, etc. which is taken with drug or food or after drug or food intake are called Anupana. Acharya charka said that every lipuid which intake after Ahar (Food) is Anupana but it is only for directional view. Acharya Dalhan also agree with Acharya charka they said that –

Anupana itself has meaning in its name-
Anu- After but Acharya Dalhan said that it is an indication for food.

In Ayurveda Acharyas did not mention anupana as a part of fun but a deep knowledge of ancient science present behind these theories. Anupana have some specific characters like –

1. Just opposite nature to food – ex: – hot nature anupana after cold nature food intake.
2. Not opposite to Dhatus – ex: – curd after milk
3. Just opposite to Dosas – ex: – in case of kaphaj disease we should take hot anupana.
4. Same nature to Medicine – ex: – cold anupana after pitta shamak medicine
5. Dependable upon disease and time – ex: – in primary case of fever we should take Usnodak (samehot water). Or liquor is good in Vat rogas in winter season but not in summer.
If we take anupana before food it creates weakness, in the middle of food it does not creates weakness or heaviness and if we take after food it creates heaviness in the body. So we can take anupana according to our requirements.

In Ayurveda best Anupana- Madhu.

According to doshas

1. V- Snigdha and Ushna
2. P- Madhur and Cold
3. K- Ruksha and Ushna
4. For week person – Alcohal is very good anupana also mandagni, Anidra etc.
5. For obes person – Madhu
6. Upvas, Marggaman, exercise after coming from hot temperature environment in these conditions best anupana is – milk
According to diseases

1. Fever – Tulsi leaf swaras , Adrak swaras , madhu, chiraita, sugandha bala, Pitpapda, shading water.
2. Chronic fever and cough – Vardhman piplli, sitopladi + Madhu, Ghee, Boiled milk
3. Shwas – Vasa juce + Adrak juce + Madhu
4. T.B. – Pure shilagatu

While there is a lack of research and experimental activity in the area of music therapy, there is an increasing level of its popularity as more and more clients find this method, non-invasive and pampering – unlike the dreadful and diabolic means adopted, more particularly in the treatments for terminal diseases.

In a research project taken up by Salminen (1990), it was found that people in old age are very interested in music, although many of them have weakened hearing or other old-age problems. McCullough (1981) came to similar conclusion on studying over 65-year-old people living in the United States (276 persons). Of the old people examined, 31 % considered music “important to some extent”, 11 % “important” and 29 % “extremely important”.

Through music, there is possibility to arrive at one’s pleasure-giving memories and fulfilling experiences connected to one’s earlier life-events. As the social relations decrease due to ageing, it becomes all the more necessary to adopt music as a companion.McCullough observed that half of his subjects reported that the meaning of music had increased with age and only one fifth reported that it had not increased. Thyroid disorders are the most common disorders we see in our daily practice. These are mainly Hypothyroidsm, Hyperthyroidism and Goiter.
Many ayurvedic practioners are adopting a vague approach by simply prescribing Kanchanara guggulu. Because the main obstacle in understanding the thyroid disorders is that there is no exact correlation of the thyroid gland in Ayurveda. But the ayurvedic system of medicine is very futuristic and it doesn’t emphasize on naming the disease. It rather insists on understanding the constitutional status of the disease and adopting the appropriate treatment principles.
The main action of thyroid hormone is to act as a spark to pep-up body metabolism by increasing the oxidative phosporylation in the mitochondria. In Ayurveda parlance it can be correlated with the actions of agni.
As per the place, the agni located in the Jathara (digestive fire) is responsible for the digestion and absorption of the food. The Bhutagni is responsible for the transformation of heterogeneous substance to homogenous substances and dhatwagni (the agni located in the body tissues) is responsible for the metabolism.
So the factors which regulate the metabolism are nothing but the dhatwagni amshas. Thyroxine is also one of the factors which regulate the metabolism, can be correlated with dhatwagni amsha. Its action is influenced by pitta, samana vata and kapha up to some extent and these are ultimately regulated by vata. These concepts are described elaborately in the consecutive chapters.
This book is divided into 4 parts. First part deals with the normal physiology, second part is hypothyroidism, third part is the hyperthyroidism and the fourth part is goiter.
Thyroid disorders are the most misdiagnosed diseases. For accurate diagnosis of the disease, more than 80 clinical features of hypothyroidism and nearly 120 clinical features of Hyperthyroidism are compiled in this book.
It would be unwise to try in vain to tackle the disease by drug only. That is why pathyapathya (wholesome and unwholesome diet and regimen) are mentioned for the above diseases.
An attempt has been made to elaborate the treatment principles (keeping the etiology in view) about the thyroid disorders without distracting the basic philosophy and precincts of Ayurveda.
Autoimmunity is the main etiological factor in thyroid disorders. The views of eminent scholars about autoimmunity in ayurveda are mentioned and the orjaskara (which gives strength to the ojus (immunity)) treatment is mentioned to prevent the triggering of the autoimmunity.
Some useful drugs and their different preparations like swarasa, kwadha, vati, lehya, ghrita (juice, decoctions, pills, medicated ghee etc.) are mentioned in this book for the convenience of the practioners.
Some popular drugs which are found in usage by ayurvedic practioners are included in this book.
It is hoped and believed that this small effort will prove to be some benefit to the students, practioners, researchers and those who are interested in science.
