The dose for the last day has been specifically stated in the classical texts.  The dose and the time taken for digestion of the ghritam are interrelated.


According to Vagbhata, the author of “Ashtanga Hrudaya” Hrasva Matra Brumhana, which takes two yams (one yama is three hours) for digestion, Madhyama matra shamana, which takes four yams and lastly Uttama matra shodhana which takes eight yama, are the three kinds of dosages.

‘Abhyanga’ means ‘oil massage.  While  a person  may perform Abhyanga on his own as part of his daily routine, trained masseurs are required to perform this therapy when it is used for disease management.  In Abhyanga, medicated  oil is massaged all over the body.  The Abhyanga that is part of the daily routine lasts for five to fifteen minutes where as that which is performed for treating diseases may take about 45 minutes.




Massages in Abhyanga can be effectively done with two therapists working on either side of the patient who lies on the droni.  The droni is the wooden bed on which the patient is made to lie while undergoing treatment.  Special care is to be taken for padabhyanga or foot massage.  The marmas or vital points on the soles of the feet are closely related with certain internal organs. The sole of the feet are closely related with certain internal organs.  The sole of the right foot is massaged in clockwise movement and the left foot in anti clockwise.


The patient reclines in seven standard positions.  This begins with the person seated in an upright position, supine or flat on the back, turning to the right side, supine again, turning to the left side, supine once again, and finally sitting as in the beginning.  Sometimes the position of lying face down is also adopted.

Composition of the human body


The human body is composed of ‘doshas, ‘dhatus’ and malas’.


Doshas (Somatic humours)


A ‘Dosha’ is a humour that regulates the human body.  Vata, Pitta and Kapha, the three somatic humours, are called ‘tridoshas’ because of their predisposition to vitation for a variety of reasons.  ‘Dosha’ connotes fault or error.  These humours, which originate from the Pancha Maha Bhutas (five great elements) regulate all the functions of the human body.  The concept of Pancha Maha Bhutas (five great elements) regulate all the functions of the body.  The concept of Pancha Maha Bhutas derives from the Indian philosophy of the evolution of the physical world.


Though they pervade the whole system, each humour tends to dominate a particular part of the body.  The Vata is responsible for the lower part, the Pitta for the middle portion and Kapha for the upper part.


When in equilibrium, the Vata, Pitta and Kapha are called ‘dhatus’.  An accumulation of amam (toxins) in the system vitiates them.   An excess or deficiency in any of the doshas disrupts its equilibrium.


Dhatus (Body Tissues)


The word ‘Dhatu’ can also be used to mean ‘body tissue’.  When used in this sense there are seven and these are called ‘Saptadhatus’.  These body tissues are formed from and nourished by the ‘Aahara rasa” which is the essence of food,  Rasa(plasma), Rakta (blood),  Mamsa (muscle), Meda (fat), Asthi (bone), Majja (bone marrow) and Shukra (semen/ova) are the seven kinds of Dhatus.  Each dhatu is believed to be a metabolic refinement of the previous one.


Malas (Wastes)


Purisha (faeces), Mutra (urine) and  Sweda (sweat) are the three Malas.


Amam and the imbalance of Tridoshas (three humours)


In Ayurveda, the Sanskrit word ‘amam’ denotes internal toxins that cause disease.  Amam results from improper metabolic functioning, which causes the system to absorb micromolecules of undigested food.  It is greasy and mucous in nature and blocks various tiny body channels (srotas).   Its accumulation causes  imbalance among the three

humours (tridoshas), which ultimately leads to various diseases.



Two Different Schools


According to one school of thought, Panchakarma refers to Nasya (nasal theraphy), Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purging) and two kinds of Vasti (therapeutic enema), Nirooha Vasti and Sneha Vasti.


Herbal decoctions are used for Nirooha Vasti and herbal oils for Sneha Vasti.  The other school, that regards rakta (blood) also as a dosha (humour), the vitation of which   can cause diseases, advocates Raktamoskshana (blood letting) as the fifth in the Panchakarma treatments.   So the five therapies are Nasya, Vamana, Virechana, Vasti and Raktamokshana .  As bloodletting involves surgical venesection, it is no longer popular.  Leeching, however, is still practised.


The Three stages of Panchakarma Therapy


Panchakarma or the shodhana therapy is always performed in three stages – Purva Karma (pre-treatment), Pradhana Karma (primary treatment) and Paschat Karma (post treatment).  The patient who intends to undergo anyone of the five therapies has invariably to undergo all the three stages.


Snehana(oleation/oil therapy) and Swedana (sudation) are the two Purva Karma procedures.  Snehana (internal oleation and external oleation) loosens the amam stuck in various sites of the body and swedana dialtes the channels to facilitate its movement towards the koshta (alimentary canal the amam that reaches the koshta is eliminated during the Pradhanakarma (primary treatment).


Diet regimens, restricted bodily exertion and the intake of health promoting drugs etc come under the Paschatkarma (post treatment).


Disease management inAyurveda


Shamana and Shodhana are the two concepts of disease management in Ayurveda. Shamana means alleviation and Shamana methods mitigate the disease and its symptoms. Shodhana means elimination and Shodana methods elimination of the basic cause of disease.


Panchakarma and Rejuvenation


The word ‘Panchakarma’ means ‘five actions’.  This is a five-pronged method of treatment designed for Shodhana, the expulsion of disease causing toxins (amam).  Panchakarma is intended not only for the elimination of toxins but also for the replenishment of the tissues.  Often tonics are prescribed after Panchakarma to rebuild the organism and rejuvenate the patient.

The inner physiological processes like digestion, metabolism, elimination of waste products etc directly affect the beauty of skin.

The process of digestion is carried out by agni or fire which is present in our digestive system.

(Agni is the body fire, which is responsible for transformation of one substance to another. It breaks down the food substances, eliminates toxins and wastes, maintains body temperature, and resists the invasion of microbes by maintaining strong body immunity.

The body fire, which is assisted by balanced doshas, digests the food completely to form Pakwa Anna rasa (the liquid form of food which is completely digested by digestive enzymes), which is ready to get absorbed by body tissues. But when body fire is impaired there will be an incomplete digestion of food forming Apakwa Rasa (indigested food). Here are some ayurvedic skin-care tips to avoid Kapha-related skin problems and to keep your skin looking radiantly fresh, clear and alive:


Stringent cleansing, at least twice a day, is crucial. Choose a cleanser that is right for your skin type. Avoid harsh cleansers in general, and aim for purification while maintaining the moisture balance of your skin. To make your own cleanser for dry or normal skin, mix together 2 tablespoons of almond meal, 2 tablespoons coarse oatmeal and a few drops of rosewater in milk or cream to form a smooth paste.




For oily skin, blend together 2 tablespoons coarse oatmeal, 2 tablespoons Bentonite clay, 1 teaspoon lemon peel powder and 1/4 teaspoon neem powder in fresh yogurt or water. Apply the cleanser in smooth upward strokes to face and neck. Wait for 3-5 minutes; then rinse off with lots of tepid water.


Once a week (twice a week if you have water or earth predominant Kapha skin), treat your facial skin to at-home herbal steam therapy before you cleanse. The herbal steam treatments will help release deep-seated toxins and clear the channels of the skin, giving it room to breathe freely. Choose herbs based on your skin type: lavender flowers and rose petal powder, for example, work well for dry or normal skin, and neem powder, citrus peel powder and holy basil powder for oily skin. Add the herbs to a bowl of boiling water. Make a tent with a towel and hold your face and neck above the steam for 8-10 minutes. Follow with an appropriate cleanser.


Oily skin can also benefit from a quick daily exfoliation with neem tea. Steep 1/4 teaspoon neem leaves in a pot of boiling water. Dip a washcloth in the infusion once it has cooled a little and dab your skin with the washcloth. Dip, squeeze and dab several times and then follow with an appropriate toner. Make sure the cloth is at a comfortable temperature before applying it to the skin.


For all-body exfoliation, use a mix of four parts chickpea flour or coarse oatmeal and one part sandalwood powder, blended in a little milk or water and a few drops of rosewater. Apply the paste to wet skin, gently scrub rougher areas such as knees, elbows and feet with a washcloth, and rinse off with plenty of tepid water.


Nourish your skin with a light application of a natural herbal moisturizer. Botanicals such as Indian Sarasaparilla, Manjistha, Marshmallow root and Turmeric are both cleansing and nourishing.


Cleansing from within is also important, to help purify the sweat glands and blood. Eat cleansing vegetables high in water content. Eat lots of sweet juicy fruits. Eat lighter foods and avoid rich sweets and deep-fried foods or heavy cheeses, especially if your ski tends to be naturally oily, as these types of foods will clog the channels further and lead to breakouts.


Drink lots of pure water everyday. Warm water is especially good for regulating elimination and cleansing toxins from the physiology. Spice-spiked detoxifying teas are even better. Basic cleansing spice teas can be made with a teaspoon each of cumin seed, coriander seed and fennel seed in one quart of water. Drop the spices into boiling water, then turn off the heat and let steep for 15 minutes. Sip the tea through the day.


Eat lighter foods in general-whole grains such as quinoa or amaranth, spring vegetables such as asparagus, baby greens and carrots, and skin-friendly spices such as turmeric and cumin cooked into foods.


The pre-bath warm oil ayurvedic self-massage, called abhyanga, is a must-do in spring. The massage not only keeps your skin silky-smooth, it also tones the muscles, calms the nerves and aids circulation, besides helping to release deeply embedded toxins. Choose a massage oil that works for your skin type-almond or jojoba for Vata skin, coconut for Pitta skin and olive or sesame for Kapha skin.


Protect your skin from the elements and from environmental pollution that can aggravate Kapha-related skin problems. Do not wear chemical-based make-up or use skin care products that contain harsh chemical ingredients as these ingredients contribute to toxic build-up in your body and in your skin.

Causes of Acne and Pimples:

A large numbers of oil producing glands called “sebaceous glands” are present under the skin ( see figure – skin cross section) on face, back, chest and shoulders. During puberty or menopause due to the influence of the sex hormones, which are produced in male and female, these glands become more active and produce an oily secretion called buying viagra now “sebum”. The sebum makes the skin more oily .The excessive sebum clogs the skin pore or the pit of the hair follicle. The blocked pore acts as good habitat for bacteria. The bacterial infection causes inflammation (red, painful swelling of the infected area) of the clogged pore or hair follicle.

Vata and Kapha are two main doshas, which are involved in eruption of acne and pimples

The oil produced by oil glands is called as meda (body fat). Kapha (one of the tridoshas) is dominant in meda. The presence of Kapha in oil makes it sticky. Vata is dominant in skin. When vata gets aggravated due to unhealthy diet and life styles, it activates the oil glands of skin  to secrete more sticky oil or sebum. Thus the  sticky oil or sebum oozes out to clog skin pores.


The factors, which vitiate VATA:

  1. Controlling natural urges like urination, defecation, sleep, hunger, thirst etc.
  2. Consuming food irregularly.
  3. Late nights.
  4. Talking in high pitch.
  5. Consuming dry, oily, spicy foods.
  6. Psychological disturbances.


The formation of black heads, white heads and scars

Black heads : The clogged pores get a dark color due to dust and excess skin pigment to cause black heads.


White heads:  The hair follicle when blocked with sebum causes white head.


Scars or Marks: When the infection spreads to sebaceous glands through infected acne a cyst develops below the skin surface. This cyst may rupture to spread the infection  to neighboring skin tissues. This causes scars or marks


Ayurveda tips to prevent acne and Pimples

1.       Avoid opposite foods.

A.      Curds ,  salt, mushrooms , bamboo shoots , sour fruits , meat , prawn , pork,  should not be consumed with  milk . The above mentioned foods should not be consumed by mixing one item with another.

B.      Sprouts, honey and milk should not be consumed with meat and fish.

C.      Fish  & milk : fish &sugarcane juice; jaggery & pork ;honey & pork;  milk & mango;  banana & milk ;   are opposite foods.)

2.       Do not exert physically after heavy meals.


3.       Do not consume foods, which lead to indigestion.

4.       Avoid exposure to extreme climates.

5.       Avoid excess usage of curds, fish , sour and salty foods, Bengal gram (urad), radish, sesame, horse gram and jaggery.

6.       Control your emotions through YOGA and MEDITATION


Dos and Don’ts  to avoid acne and pimples



1.   Consume more water and keep your body well hydrated.

2.   Wash your face thoroughly with a soap that suits your skin, 4 to 5 times a day. Avoid excessive removal of oil, as skin needs certain amount of oil to maintain its natural healthy condition.

3.   Wash your face thoroughly after using a make up as some beauty products block the pores.

4.   Consume green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits.

5.    Sleep sufficiently for long hours

3.       Squeezing of acne.

4.       Too much consumption of soft drinks, tea, coffee.
