AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF
Rheumatoid Arthritis can be corelated to a disease called as Aamavata
which includes the Aama ie the indigested material which produce toxins
which lead to the abnormal changes in body along with the viciated
vata- ie the dosha present in the body which gets imbalanced in the
body due to many causes,
We see many symptoms like pain, heavy feeling in joints and bone
rites like pain, along with symptom like bad appetite, along with
these where the viciated Aama moves it shows or presents in form
of severe pain, catch feeling. Restricted movements, Decreased sensation.
combination of food items.
rather exercise suddenly after meals.
Rheumatiod Arthritis is inflamatory disease of many joints manifested
due to systemic causes.
The causes are divided in 2 parts
1. Excess excretion or extra exercises that leads to abnormal increase
in Vata dosha.
2. Regular Abnormal and oily food items which leads to production
The above causes lead to production of viciated Vatadosh and Aams
This gets collected and starts moving through the blood vessels
and spreads all over the body.
The viciated dosha and Aama gets collected in the specific sites
of body parts which are more prone to it like the joints, head,
As accumulates in chest complains like weakness, heaviness, in
chest etc. symptoms are seen.
Feeling of heaviness for the whole body.
Abnormal circulation of Aama and Vata all over the body.
Sequency stiffness and pain in sites of joints.
Deformity in joints along with swelling and severe pain
fever(On and off or resistent)
of heaviness in body.
joints (bigger joints)
These are symptoms in the very early phase of Aamavata. The same
symptoms turn more severe in late phases of Aamavata.Along with
these, swelling and severe pain is seen in joints of hands, legs,
ankle. wrist, knee, thighs due to that symptoms like loss of sensation,
hot skin touch, reddish inflamed discoloration is noticed due to
which conditions like restricted movements, painful movements, loss
of movements is seen.
The pain or similar condition are seen on a shifting pattern on
all joints. When the symptoms are seen on one joints the next day
may be it could have shifted on another joint leaving the previous
joint back to normal. It is due to the momentary circulation and
pathology of Aama and Vata dosha.
The pain experienced by a person in Aamavata is very intense and
severe and unbearable so it is more compared to the pain given by
a scorpion bite.Along with these there, are many other corelated
symptoms seen like.
or decreased appetite.
sensation of body.
If more chronic conditions could have complications like cardiac
problems like enlargement of heart, cardiac muscle stiffness, chest
pain, deformed joints, hot, burning joints, cracking sounds in joints
along with stiffness and pain.
LINE OF TREATMENT ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA
The main line of treatment deals with management of the Aama.
Hence procedures like
and digestive changes)
and pungent recessive drugs
which enhance digestion.
Such remedies are taken into consideration.
In Sudation dry dr0ug sudation is recommended.Oil Massage and sudation
helps in clearing the blocaked in the vessels.
- Sudation is mainly done with the help of valuka pottali that
is the boulons of sand and herbs.
- Different type of Lepa (locall application of medicinal herbs)
in improving the condition.
- Different procedures like the detoxification of the body with
the help of procedures like the Virechana (purgativi) and Vamana
- Management of same also includes procedures like BASTI ie administration
of medicinal combination through the ano-rectal route.
- There are many helpful internal medication in form of tablets
or capsules and syrups along with external application of ointments,
liniments and gels.
- Along with all this specific diet also plays and important role
in Aamavata management. Diet consisting of dry, light, warm or
hot easily digestable food items.
- Recommendation of balanced and unbalanced diet.
- Single drug therapy.
- Nutraceutical drugs.
Yoga and pranayama for arthritis
Arthritis is a group of different diseases related with bone joints(articulations)
The most common of them are rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis
and gouty arthritis. In all of them one or more bone joints are
found to be inflammated, associated with pain and stiffness in the
adjoining areas of teh joint including muscles.
It is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease of unknown cause.
In this disease the body attacks its own tissues, particularly its
own cartilage and liningls of joints.
Inflammation of the joint, swelling, pain and loss of function
Common form of joint disease, sparing noaze, race or geographic
areas. Millions and millions of people all over the world suffer
from the effects of this condition, and 90% of them show radiographic
features of osteoarthritis in weight bearing joints by age 40
Characterized by degeneration of cartilage and by the hypertrophy
of bone at the joint margins. Inflammation is usually minimal.
To get better results from above disease one should adopt following
asanas and pranayama.
Yoga & Asanas
- Pavan muktasan
- Ardha matsyendrasana
- Anulom and viloma
Stress, fear, and anxiety all tend to be interactive.
The principal components of anxiety are psychological (tension,
fears, difficulty in concentration, apprehension) somatic(tachycardid,
hyperventilation, palpitation, tremor, sweating)
Symptoms of anxiety disorders
- Fears of impending
- Chest pain
- Frequency of micturation
- Initial insomnia
- Poor concentration
Anxiety may be free floating, resulting in acute anxiety attacks
occassionally become chronic. When one or several defence mechanisms
are functioning the consequences are well known problems such as
phobia, conversion reactions, dissociative states, obsessions and

Myositis Ossifican's can be compared with Mansa Gat-Vata.
It is one of the vitiated vata disorder's where Mansa is the one

Menopause happens. It’s a natural transition, says ayurveda,
and like all transitions, menopause has to be managed to minimize
Why menopause discomfort occurs ?
Since menopause is the transition from the Pitta phase of life to
the Vata phase, if a woman already has a significant Pitta or Vata
imbalance in the years before menopause, things are likely to get
worse during menopause, which is a period when hormonal and other
natural changes take place in the body.
Another factor leading to menopausal imbalances is the accumulation
of digestive impurities (ama) in the physiology. Ama blocks the
channels that transport nutrition to the cells and remove waste
from the body, and thus contributes to menopausal problems.
A third factor is the misuse or overuse of the mind, body, emotions,
or senses much ongoing stress or pressure, or is doing work that
is too “heavy” for her body, or is under tremendous
The Ayurvedic perspective
Ayurveda identifies two major types of joint problems. The
first type is associated with poorly nourished joints or low bone
density and overall weakness in the joints. This kind of problem starts
with some discomfort, a cracking sound, and if not taken care of,
results in eventual immobilization of the joints. Because the bone
is not getting the nourishment it needs, it starts to degenerate.
The second kind is associated with a toxins in the body. As ama (the
sticky, toxic waste-product of incomplete digestion) accumulates in
the joint, it first creates stiffness and heaviness. If it stays there
for a long time, the joint can become swollen and painful. Damp, cold
weather can aggravate this type of joint problem.
Vata related joint problem
When vata, which is the aspect of vata that governs the
circulation and nerve impulses, is aggravated, the first type of
joint problem can occur. The person’s circulation, metabolism,
and ability to absorb food are weakened; as a result, the bone tissue
does not receive enough nourishment and eventually starts to degenerate.
The imbalance in vata and the weakened circulation, metabolism and
absorption create a drying effect on Kapha, governs lubrication
of the joints. When this happens, the joints are not lubricated
properly and this creates the discomfort, cracking sound, and diminished
Ama-related joint problem
This second type of joint problem is really a problem of
ama (digestive toxins) in the joints, and is characterized by a
heavy, stiff feeling. Sometimes about of cold, humid weather can
trigger these symptoms. That is the first stage. If nothing is done
to dissolve the ama and it sits in the joints for a long time, eventually
the ama converts to Amavisha, an even more toxic form of ama that
is more irritating and reactive in nature. Amavisha causes the joint
to become inflamed, swollen, and painful. In this kind of environment,
ama also mixes with the natural lubricating fluids in the joint
governed by it. Kapha, forming an extremely sticky, toxic substance
restricts mobility and disturbs circulation in the joint. If the
same stay in the joints unattended to for a long time, eventually
the structure of the joints and the bone itself becomes damaged.
Once these morphological changes happen to the joint and bone, it
becomes extremely difficult to correct.
Ways to boost natural Immunity
There is a theory of immunity in ayurveda caked the beej-bhumi theory,
which means “seed and land”. In this case, the body
is analogous to the land, and infection or “bugs” are
like seeds. If the body is filled with ama and lacking in ojas,
the infection will find it to be fertile ground for spreading, just
as land that is fertile will sprout many seeds. If digestion is
strong, and ojas rather than ama predominates in the body, then
the seeds of infection will not be able to take hold, just as seeds
will not take root in land that is infertile.
Everyone is more susceptible to respiratory problems when the seasons
are changing, such as in the fall and early spring. This is because
the body functions differently in each season, and in the transition
between the hot and cold seasons the agni, or digestive fire, can
start to fluctuate dramatically. If you do not adjust your diet
and routine and follow the ayurvedic guidelines for the seasonal
transitions, you can build up ama. Once the body is fertile for
disease, it is easy for a cold or flu to sprout, as in the seed
and land theory mentioned earlier.
That is why respiratory illnesses and allergies abound in the fall
and early spring. In the early spring, there is an added factor,
because ama accumulated during the winter starts to melt, flooding
the micro-channels and overloading the immune system. The body’s
immune system is weakened, and becomes a fertile ground for bacteria
